Quirky, fun digital for a more impactful experience

The market leader in sushi restaurants first opened in London in 1987, and now operates almost 200 restaurants in the UK, Scandinavia, Middle East and US.

The Challenge

To remain an exciting, fun, fresh, quirky brand, YO! Sushi wanted to use digital to revitalise their quirky customer experience with intriguing brand comms.

What we did

Our sister brand Music Concierge was already curating the store sound for the sushi brand, and we wanted to make the digital experience equally full of personality to match YO!’s unique positioning.

The brand prides itself on the presentation of its food, so we developed concepts to bring the menu artwork to life through evocative video. In the spirit of the brand’s modern Japanese heritage, we proposed using quirky, animation-style ‘kaiwaii girls’ motion graphics for in-store screens to showcase their hero menu items, bringing personality and energy onto the screens in a fresh and engaging way, while remaining faithful to the brand’s unique look and feel. We built in the functionality to reskin the screens to promote Blue Mondays, when all plates are blue, with cheaper prices are aimed at students.

We proposed linking the video to the brand’s new musicscape for a more dynamic experience, interspersing graphics with current Japanese pop music videos and building in cool functionality: live Twitterfeeds, and the ability to take selfies and post them on YO! screens all over the world.

The digital menu walls exactly captured the brand feel, and we’re continuing to work with YO!’s in-house marketing team to develop a bigger strategy for digital and social at the heart of the in-store experience – and put the brand firmly on the map as a digital innovator.

“We love the creative freedom working on such a dynamic, vibrant brand.”
